A breast cancer journey is life-altering at any age

My name is Martina Ivey, and last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 40 years of age. Whilst preparing for surgery to remove the tumor, I found out I was pregnant.

Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, affecting both men and women.

I was one of the lucky ones. Not only did I have access to the best clinical treatment, I also had the very best in compassionate care at St John of God Subiaco Hospital. I always felt safe, wherever I was.

I’m so grateful for the care I received, and now I’m fundraising to make sure others can access the same amazing support.

You can help people fighting breast cancer in our community to receive the same exceptional, personalised care that I did, and greatly improve their quality of life.

Please donate below to support the very best health care for the people we love.

“They’re such amazing people that give so generously, so people like me can have a different journey.” – Martina Ivey.

My story

All my prayers and more were answered at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.

I know not everyone’s prayers are answered, so there is not a day that goes past that I don’t thank the incredible people looking after me and my baby, during my chemotherapy treatment, pregnancy and beyond.

The care I received coupled with the access I had to life-altering technology, knowledge and treatment essentially made my cancer journey one which I will look back on with gratitude forever.

“I always felt safe, wherever I was.”

Martina and her baby Hugo looking at the camera. The fact that I was able to carry and grow a healthy baby through cancer treatment, not lose my hair and feel relatively normal and continue working, through 16 rounds of chemo all comes down to the amazing doctors and nurses looking after me and the facilities I had access to.

Some days I look back and wish I could do pregnancy again and just think about normal mum things, instead of getting through treatment and treatment days, but when I do I soon correct my thoughts and think how incredibly lucky I was and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Both baby Hugo and I are stronger, more bonded and resilient now because of our experience.

Thank you to each and every one of you who so generously give to make a difference in strangers lives – it is making miracles happen.
