Research at St John of God Health Care focuses on projects across a range of clinical fields that have the greatest potential to improve patient care. With support from our community and other key collaborators, this research can help to shape the future of health care in Australia and across the globe.
Thanks to visionary philanthropic support from the Bendat Family Foundation and matched funding from St John of God Health Care, the Bendat Respiratory Research and Development (BRRD) Group at St John of God Subiaco Hospital is at the forefront of world-leading medical research into respiratory medicine and respiratory oncology.
The group aims to better understand lung and respiratory disease to develop advanced treatments through translational research.
In acknowledgement of their contributions in the field, BRRD was recently recognised as having one of the top-cited papers in leading peer-reviewed publication, the Internal Medicine Journal. The paper, Doctors' understanding of consent law, examines Western Australian doctors’ knowledge of the requirements under Australian law for patient consent for medical procedures. The study included a cross-sectional survey of WA medical practitioners, the results of which suggested that there is a need to enhance education in relation to consent law, in order to meet medicolegal requirements and optimise consent.
Through their support for innovative new research, the Bendat Family Foundation continues to make an impact on a global scale, and we are grateful for their commitment to transforming health care for our communities.
